There is no plan for the ruling United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to have any tug with any Muslim political parties. Muslims believe in the ability of the President and greatly expect that he will bring to a satisfactory resolution the issues connected with minorities vis-à-vis Tamils and Muslims.
Speaking to Asian Tribune Abdul Risath Bathiyutheen, Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services, said right throughout the last four years, Ceylon Muslim Congress was working hand in hand with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the UPFA Government.
Therefore, there is no need for the UPFA to enter into a fresh alliance either with Sri Lanka Muslim Congress or with its leader Rauff Hakeem.
In 2008, President Mahinda Rajapaksa invited Rauff Hakeem and appointed him as a Minister with cabinet status, but during the second final budget session, he walked away and voted against the budget proposal of the UPFA.
Similarly in the last Presidential election, Minister Abdul Risath Bathiyutheen said it was Rauff Hakeem who worked with Sarath Fonseka and dragged the TNA to support the common opposition candidate and both Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and TNA worked on a single line agenda of ‘sending Mahinda home’.
“Even if someone has forgotten Rauff Hakeem stabbing us in our back in 2008, how can one forget what happened during the last Presidential election,” the Minister said.
Abdul Risath Bathiyutheen further said that in the forthcoming Parliamentary election UPFA will sweep the polls and win convincingly two third majority to bring about progressive change in the country and make Sri Lanka a prosperous nation.
He further added as the President had assured in his election meeting held in Puttalam the Muslims who were uprooted from the North nearly 20 years ago would be resettled in their places in North soon.
Muslims believed in Mahinda Rajapaksa and trust the minorities issue will be dealt with to the satisfaction of all he said.
