UN Gen Secretary Congratulates President

Colombo, 11 February, (Asiantribune.com):

United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki Moon congratulated President Mahinda Rajapaksha over his resounding victory at the presidential elections which was concluded last month.

General Secretary Ban Ki Moon speaking o the President Rajapaksa over the telephone has wished to succeed all the efforts taken by the government to establish the peace and order in the country. He has also pledged the United Nations’ corporation whenever the country needs.

The 25 minute telephone conversation was initiated by the UNSG's office.

Presidential Secretariat issuing a release said that President briefed that UN General Secretary over the efforts which already taken to conduct a free and fair general election. President had also stressed that all

President Rajapaksa had also asked the UN’s assistance for the development programs which had been already kicked all over the island and specially recently liberated North and East provinces.

President has also briefed the UN General Secretary that the Sri Lankan Government has appointed an independent commission headed by Presidential Counsel D.S.Wijethunga to look into human rights violations or related incidents at the war against terrorism, specially the final battle which the terror outfit leader was killed.

President Rajapaksha further said that Non Governmental Organizations will be allowed to continue in humanitarian and development projects in the liberated areas but the government will be very keen on their responsibility and the transparency of their works.
