Sri Lanka: Jaffna Attracts Most Tourists

Colombo, 13 February, (Asiantribune.com):

Tourism Ministry has taken measures to upgrade the tourism industry in the Northern Province, setting up three new tourism complexes in the province.

Accordingly new complexes will be set up in Jaffna, Mannar and Mullaithivu districts, an official from the Tourism Ministry said.

The official said that locations from three districts have already been selected and each area will be an area of over 100 acres enabling to fully facilitate the tourists who are willing to visit the northern part of the country.

The Ministry Secretary George Michel had already completed the preliminary discussions over the implementation of construction works with the three respective District Secretaries. The Ministry official further added that the industry has shown a remarkable improvement at present and it is a positive sign for the industry’s future.

Adding further he said that compared to the 2009 January tourists arrival, the January 2010 arrival is an improvement of 31.9 per cent.

He said that only 38,468 tourists had arrived in January 2009 and this year January the number shows as 50,757. He also added that Jaffna had received unexpected number tourists only in the first week of this month.
