(Exclusive) A shocking and sensational revelation Asian Tribune learnt that when the then General Sarath Fonseka made an official visit to Washington in his capacity as the Chief of Defence Staff on October 24, 2009, he had clandestine meetings with the top agents of US Department of State and Department of Homeland Security.
During those meeting with those agents, he handed over, it was reported, classified documents regarding the final phase of the war with Tamil Tigers in Vanni, and specially prepared CDs depicting the vivid scenarios of the encounters with the Tigers including the shooting down of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and his family members, by a leading LTTE member who agreed to work for Government at the last stages of the battle and the doing away of many other important leaders.
According to sources in USA, it was learnt that Sarath Fonseka met discreetly and those Agents had several rounds of talks with him at a secret location and assured that he will be safeguarded in any future action taken up against Sri Lanka Government and charged in any war crimes Tribunal.
Also it was agreed that to begin with, Sarath Fonseka would resign his position, and contest against the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa .
The American agents agreed to foot the election expenses. It was planned by a victory in the Presidential election or by any other means Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family would be eliminated. Also the Agents assured him that the international community would be behind him.
Subsequently a drama was staged of Fonseka giving his consent to meet the officials of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at its Oklahoma office on November 4, which put the Sri Lanka Government off the hook.
Subsequently, he was allowed to leave Washington and he travelled back to Colombo on the 4th November 2009.
After coming back to Sri Lanka the first thing he did was to visit the US Embassy in Colombo and meet the controversial US Ambassador in Colombo Patricia A. Butenis and the detail of the meeting is still not revealed.
As planned in Washington on 12 November 2009, Sarath Fonseka tendered his resignation from the Army as Chief of Defence Staff to contest in the election against Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The main leaders of the Opposition were already contacted by the US agents to accommodate Sarath Fonseka as their common candidate against Mahinda Rajapaksa.
But to their dismay Asian Tribune came up, for the first time, with the thunderbolt, the arms deals and corruption of Danuana Tilakaratne, the arms dealer son-in-law of Sarath Fonseka, which took the country with awe and consternation.
Once this was revealed, forces behind Sarath Fonseka were at work to dilute the charges leveled by Asian Tribune with counter allegations against Asian Tribune . The allegation had it that the Asian Tribune worked for the Government, received payments, editor was on the pay-roll of the Government and so many other character assassination stories, but unfortunately all those unsubstantiated allegations failed to subdue the writer.
Those character assassination stories planted by Sarath Fonseka’s scribes was followed by a Lawyer’s notice for US$100 million against Asian Tribune . This also failed to silence this writer instead it provoked and Asian Tribune to bring out the arms deal and amassing millions ill-gotten money by arms deals, and this matter was brought to the notice of the law enforcement agencies in the USA.
Also Asian Tribune followed it up with nearly another 15 news articles exposing Sarath Fonseka with corruption and labeling him as the “Mother of all the Corruption”.
This was something which was not expected and those who handled Sarath Fonseka were alarmed to note that every time the Asian Tribune came up with a new disclosure Sarath Fonseka’s build-up image as a patriot began to crumble and gradually he was exposed as the mother of all corruption and the Sarath Fonseka’s camapaign team was forced to be all the time on the defensive.
The last strategy they adopted was to assassinate on 27th January, Mahinda Rajapaksa on his way back to Temple Trees from the Election Commissioner’s office.
Again they could not implement it as Asian Tribune has alerted that Sarath Fonseka and his men were occupying rooms nearly 100 in all and were up to some mischief which alerted the Army to cordon round the hotel-- a development which again not expected by Sarath Fonseka and his men.
Sarath Fonseka is a man who by nature a revengeful person, who will never tolerate anyone who stand on his way or anyone who oppose him.
He was fuming with anger against Gottabaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa for removing him from the all powerful position of the Army Commander and appointed him to a toothless position as Chief of Defence Staff.
He was furious that Gottabaya Rajapaksa turning back the shipment of arms arranged by his son-in-law from Polytechnologist in China.
He was also furious as an Army Commander Gottabaya Rajapaksa was controlling all his moves. So he vowed to himself to end the Rajapaksa clan once and for all by hook or crook methods.
He was an army man with vengeance. He was prepared to work with the devil and LTTE, the very organization he claimed to have defeated in the war.
