The fate of General Fonseka.
Sri Lanka is united for the first time in 500 years by forces arising entirely within Sri Lanka. The 1st and essential stage in building a powerful independent state is now complete.
The magnitude of this achievement can be understood in the light of subversive activities carried out by the American, British and Norwegian diplomats to undermine the democratic will of the people of in Sri Lanka. Some of the suspects that have been arrested with Sarath Fonseka have revealed that one of the incentives offered for working for him was a Green Card upon victory and a pocket full of dollars.
Had Sarath Fonseka not been arrested he would have probably ended up in one of these embassies after his infamous BBC statement only to be whisked out to the Hague for a fabricated piece evidence against his own country and his army. He is a man driven by an unprecedented level of hatred, vendetta, and revenge never before seen in Sri Lankan politics.
Unlike in countries like Yugoslavia, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan,..etc their plans failed due to courage of conviction of the people of Sri Lanka to protect their country. Their agent General Sarath Fonseka who was comprehensively beaten at the election was for some luck and courage of GOSL is now arrested. Therefore the best laid American plans (together with the LTTE Diaspora) to indict Sri Lankans and their armed forces for war crimes now lie in tatters.
Fonseka was more spit and froth than substance as one writer said shooting himself many a time in the foot during the campaign trail much to the pleasure of leaders like Ranil Wickramasinghe. However the danger was in that he repeatedly was talking about summary executions of political opponents at Galle Face and the jail houses of Bogambara and Welikada being thrown open to accommodate all other political opponents. No doubt quite a few in the opposition, leaders like Ranil Wickramasinghe knew the disastrous consequences of the military rule. They were able to understand the dangers of a Military dictatorship unlike the Colombian supporters whose blind hatred toward the Rajapakse’s only supersedes that of Fonseka’s hatred and vendetta.
Today the pressure that is being mounted on the government for the release of Fonseka by various quarters in the western world and their agents in Sri Lanka. It is very similar to the pressure that was mounted on the Sri Lankan Government during last phase of the Eelam war 4. The western allies in the region like India are mounting impossible political demands at this current moment to create further instability on the ground for GOSL who is facing a general election. However GOSL needs to do what is best for the country and not to be seen relenting to such pressure. Even if it were to emanate from the Mahanayake’s.
The results of such firm resoluteness could be seen in the results of the last presidential election.
The GOSL must understand that the rural masses of Sri Lanka unlike the urban populations have the capacity to correctly judge and rise up each time to shape the future course this country. By their responsible actions as a Proud Nation these sons of the soil have thwarted the well laid out plans of the west time and time again. They will not back any religious leader of the country with an ulterior agenda detrimental to the country.
The GOSL must fully comprehend the magnitude of the military and election victory it has achieved. It has come in the teeth of resistance of every foreign force hostile to the emergence of Sri Lanka supported unconditionally by those sections within Sri Lanka who see themselves essentially as aspirants of the white man’s status.
In the same circles such persons have been somewhat uncharitably called “traitors”, “hyenas”, and even “Colombans”.
However these forces are now shattered. They also know that their political ideology is comprehensively and repeatedly defeated by a majority of the people. Although they will never be heard to say so. The forward march need not and cannot be delayed spending time in aiming well timed kicks in their direction that they time after time fail to see coming their way.
Mahinda Rajapakse has been elected by a grateful and far more importantly shrewd and mature electorate. Shrewd and mature in that the electorate saw in the much vaunted common opposition candidate (erstwhile victorious general) not to be the proclaimed change they could trust but a puppet manipulated by the very forces who were finally crushed on the banks of Nathikadal lagoon.
The political map of this country is therefore now drawn with clarity that only the most otiose will fail to see. The electorate sees itself as a proud and free nation rather than a client state happy to receive hand outs from western powers at the expense of the ability to charter their own destiny.
What they look forward to now is economic prosperity and a government independent of American led western manipulations.
One of the basic requirements for the operation of economic forces necessary to deliver this economic prosperity is a credible opposition. Every government has to be held accountable in between elections, that all their decisions are taken for the benefit for the people of the country and not for the benefit of a few who surround decision makers with the hope of personal gain.
This task can only be accomplished by an opposition that is credible in the eyes of the electorate. The fatal weakness of the leaders of the current opposition parties particularly the UNP is that the leadership is in the hands of people who are content to be pawns in the hands of foreign forces (such as the USA, UK, India and Norway...etc.) who are hostile to the resurgence of Sri Lanka as a nation state for their own strategic interests. Therefore the electorate has rejected them emphatically. This is understood only too well by those who condemned the war effort speaking of Madawachiya instead of Killinochiya.
It is for that reason they have sought to disguise themselves by hiding behind symbols they hope the electorate will see as nationalist.
It is for this reason Sarath Fonseka who was full of hatred and vengeance was exploited by these forces and thrust forward as the common opposition candidate, to contest an unwinnable election and encouraged to level wild accusations relating to the conduct of an internal conflict. This tactic has not benefitted neither the opposition nor the symbol they chose to hide behind but their puppeteers the Americans, the British and the Norwegians.
The opposition today remains discredited as ever; along with their nationalist symbol who has gone from being a victorious hero to a defeated figure of fun.
The opposition without learning a lesson from the sound thrashing which its nationalist symbol received at the hands of the electorate at the Presidential election have now sought a different refuge.
This time they have taken refuge behind the robes of the Mahanayakes. The statement made by the Mahanayakes if it seeks to promote democracy cannot be faulted.
This statement once again is precipitated because they are being seen as symbols of nationalism by the opposition.
There is no doubt whatsoever that this attempt to use the Mahanayakes as a Trojan horse will fail miserably. One needs only to look at the fate of Sarath Fonseka if one has any doubt.
Full details of his opposition to resettlement of IDP’s as army commander to Lasantha Wickramathunge case are yet to be disclosed to the public by the government. However the statements on war crimes are damaging enough. The damage done by Sarath Fonseka in this respect is irreparable. It is not something that be easily forgotten because it was not directed at a particular individual but an entire country and an entire army.
Can the Mahanayake’s guarantee Sarath Fonseka’s behaviour ? On the other hand whether or not the president should pardon Fonseka is entirely another matter.
In page 46 of a recently declassified report against Sri lanka by the US Department of State to the US House of Congress titled “Report to Congress on Incidents During the Recent Conflict in Sri Lana” 2009 states. (This report is based mostly unverifiable and unspecified sources of evidence and photographs complied in typical American haste except the following interesting statement attributed to the commander of the Sri Lanka Army)
Quote July 10 - A media outlet reported on July 18 that at a celeb
ratory event in Ambalangoda, Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka stated that the military had to overlook the traditional rules of war and even kill LTTE rebels who came to surrender carrying white flags during the war against the LTTE Unquote
These dates do not correspond. Furthermore it is useful to note that Fonseka was appointed CDS on 15th July of 2009 and all reportedly according to the Americans before any presidential election campaign ever took place.
Does this means in all likelihood he was in contact with the anti Sri Lankan forces trying to frame particular Sri Lankan officers and soldiers ? Questions that can be answered only by a proper investigation. All the more reason because western agents in the local political spectrum are determined to hide those skeletons in their cupboards.
No doubt it is only but correct for the military and judicial due processes of Sri Lanka be allowed to proceed without any external hindrance and without all and sundry being judge and jury about the charges that will be brought against Sarath Fonseka.
A proper investigation in national interest at this juncture is paramount. The Sri Lankan public must be educated on the role America and western powers played in destabilising Sri Lanka since the commencement of the war.
If the opposition wishes to resurrect itself, and oppose the incumbent regime within the law without harming national interest, it must first throw out the quartet of quislings that have led them from one convincing defeat to another. This unholy alliance is seen by the common man as one that has come together only for self interest of a “political industry” they represent not that of the country.
The task of opposing the government democratically it must be led by persons whose nationalist credentials are impeccable while the vision for Sri Lanka is not that to be a prosperous vassal 52nd state of the USA like a well fed but impotent turkey fattened for a thanksgiving table at the State Dept.

Thank you Mr. Dimuth
Thank you Mr. Dimuth Gunawardena for an excellent article that sets out the background of responsibility that should be understood and decried by all Sri Lankans, with regard to the opportunistic and unacceptable role of the unholy political alliance of Opposition leaders which has misled this egoistic, ambitious, angry and vengeance-filled General into creating an unnecessary mess for himself and for the country he had served. What a tragedy!!
Capitalizing on the fissures between the General and the President's team, these Opposition leaders have extended these fissures through almost the entirety of Sri Lanka's polity. Their latest is an attempt to drag in the Buddhist clergy as well into their unethical political games. Such irresponsibility of behavior that has no limits to what they would resort to with no concern to the detriment of the country's well being in addition to tarring its image only serves to expose them.
Little do these leaders realise that they are damaging themselves in the process and doing everything to destroy the rebuilding of a healthy and responsible Opposition that can work constructively and not destructively at such a critical time in this nation's history as the oldest democracy in the region!!
This man, Sarath Fonseka, has
This man, Sarath Fonseka, has broken the hearts of all those who truly love their Motherland,
Sri Lanka. He has in his wayward & selfish political ambitions trod on the deepest feelings of loyalty of those born to this fair land. He has belittled those who died to keep Lanka a practicing Democracy, both in the battlefield & in the political arena. He could have easily reaped the just rewards for his help in the war against the ltte - instead of that, he succumbed to the wily machinations of others who plan to destabilize our country. So, if SF & his coterie can do just that, will he ever be a fit person to lead our country ? It is time that all Lankans look into their own Hearts & decide which way they want their country to go - toward Prosperity & Peace or toward Disillusionment & Despair.
