Karunanidi's Sudden cry for State Autonomy: Any problem with the Centre?
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK Partiarch, M Karunanidhi on Wednesday Asserted that the DMK's demand for state autonomy was not secessionist, but party's "dream" of autonomy would become a reality one day.
Once upon a time, the DMK's slogan was separate Dravidian State including Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra and subsequently this was dropped by his mentor and DMK founder Anna Durai(ANNA).
When Karunanidhi took over the party leader ship and became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, after the demise of Anna, he modified the slogan, and sought state autonomy.
For the past 11 years, DMK has been a part of the Union Government and has been ruling the country and Karunanidhi seemed to have forgotten the slogan of state autonomy.
All of a sudden Karunanidhi wrote a article in his party mouth piece 'Murosoli' said,“To preserve the country’s hard earned freedom and since the Centre will be stronger only if the states are stronger, DMK has been raising the issue (state autonomy)...The dream of state autonomy will become a reality one day.”
The DMK patriarch said the state autonomy will only strengthen the national integration. Likening the country to a necklace, he said, “A gold necklace can be stronger only if the link that joins every piece is stronger. We have named that link as state autonomy.”
There was nothing wrong in demanding state autonomy, he said, adding that it was not aimed at dividing the country.
"Speculations are there in the political circle that the Congress is moving towards AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa for a political alliance. This rumor came out after Ms.Jayalalithaa met the Congress President Mrs.Sonia Gandhi in Delhi recently, Which perpetrated Karunanidhi to raise state autonomy slogan", a political analysts said.
