Sri Lanka : The Minister of Posts Reiterates the Need for a Solid Plan for Development
Participating at the inaugural meeting held in Kalutara, subsequent to taking up appointment as Kalutara District Organizer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Nandana Gunatillake stated that, in 1989 when the JVP was suppressed and banned, only a few others including himself, stood by the party to safeguard its mission.
Minister Nandana Gunatillake further said that, “There were many who deserted the party during that time, such as Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Vijitha Herath, and many others who left the party, deserting its policies and agenda. However today, claiming they are the leaders of the party, these people are taking the party to its downfall.
Speaking further, the Minister added, “I left the party and joined SLFP as I realized their mistake and the wrong path they are taking. We need a progressive political force to develop the country. SLFP has that power and the capacity. That is why I joined the SLFP.
He also said, “Therefore, I request all members of the JVP, in the Kalutara District to think about the country and join the active SLFP. My political career is clean without any charge of corruption. Therefore, I received 135,000 votes at the last election. I believe I will get an even better percentage of votes this time. The President has defeated terrorism and begun the process of developing the country.
“A strong government is needed for that progressive process. A cabinet of ministers who can work without corrupt practices, is needed. The people of Kalutara must choose who is to be appointed from Kalutara for this development process.”
“Don’t vote for me, because I am from Panadura – a neighbour of Kalutara, or because of the service I have done to the nation. If you believe that I am needed for the President’s development plan of the country, then appoint me with the highest percentage of preferential votes” the Minister concluded.
