India stresses ‘political settlement’ in Sri Lanka
India has stressed to the Sri Lankan government “the necessity” of reaching a political settlement acceptable to all the communities there, including the Tamils.
External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said while replying to a written question in Parliament: “The government is of the view that the conclusion of the military operations in Sri Lanka provides an opportunity to make a new beginning and pursue a lasting political settlement in Sri Lanka,”
He said the way forward lies in a peacefully negotiated political settlement within the framework of a united Sri Lanka acceptable to all the communities there, including the Tamils.
“The necessity of reaching a political settlement has been stressed to the Sri Lankan government,” he informed. India has taken several initiatives to provide humanitarian relief assistance to IDPs (Internally Displaced People) and civilians affected by the conflict in Northern Sri Lanka, including 5200 tons of shelter material and 70,000 agricultural starter’s packs.

WE SRI LANKANS ARE WELL SETTLED
Mr. Vasudevan, Sri Lanka is One Country, One Law and One type of people. We only have Sri Lankans here whether they are Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Malay, English, or any other. We can not have different laws for each racial group. All Sri Lankans have equal rights. So what are you talking of?
If so, what is Prez Rajapakse
If so, what is Prez Rajapakse talking about when he states that he will resolve the problem. Very recently the Prez stated that the Tamils will have to work with him in order to resolve the problem. Prez Rajapakse is not trying to resolve a problem that does not exist. He is trying to resolve a problem that exists. But like all our politicians, he keeps dragging his feet. And that is why the international community is losing its patience with Sri Lanka.
What does this international community expect?
Vanakkam Aiya,
You appear to be relying heavily on "an international community" to have a solution to "the problem". As regards international communities there are many in the world.
UNO, EU, ASEAN, OAU, SAARC, CIS etc. etc. So next time when you write about the international community, which is losing patience with Sri Lanka, I woulld appreciate if you could name the community.
"The problem" you are refering to must be having an international relations component for the "international community to lose patience with Sri Lanka". At the moment there appear to be three such issues;
1. Parliamentarians of the member countries of the "particular international community", who are heavily dependent on the Tamils living in those countries;
2. Gaining foothold in Sri Lanka to penetrate Indian markets or to control the ever expanding Indian defence capabilities;
3. Exploitation of vast natural natural resources in the ocean territory of Sri Lanka;
What President MR is concerned about is ensuring equal access for all Sri Lankans to domestic happiness. That is why he is inviting the Tamils to work with him to resolve "the problem".
We are One Nation!
Dear Mr. Thambi, All who say they have problems need to list out the problems and talk openly. The so called International Community who are losing its patience may be the people who want to see a division in sir Lanka which they can take as the second step to India to have division there too to destabilise this region. We need to look look at all problems within Sri Lankan people, strictly considering all people living in this country as one Nation called Sri Lankans. We simply can not have separate laws and facilities for Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Malays, Burgers, English and all other racial groups of people living in Sri Lanka.
