Winning two-thirds majority, not a challenge for the Freedom Alliance – Media Minister
The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa will definitely secure two thirds majority at the forthcoming general elections, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said.
The Minister speaking to the media persons in jubilant manner, said that the Freedom Alliance kicked off its election campaign for the Presidential elections from the party’s grass root level and it was successful. “As we are to follow the same procedure at the general elections too, the Freedom Alliance has no any barrier to achieve its target of two thirds majority in the House”, he said.
He also added that a number of surveys which were concluded by several institutes have shown so far there is no challenge for the ruling UPFA. Minister was also saying the United National Party’s trade union sector (Jathika Sewaka Sangamaya) was no more campaigning for the party and hundreds and JSS members are receiving the membership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party trade union network.
The Minister further speaking pointed out that he regreted on the statement made by the retired chief justice Sarath N. Silva regarding the arrest of failed Presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka.
“It is not acceptable and appropriate to make statements regarding a case being heard in the courts. It was crystal clear he was arrested according to the Military Act and the military rules regulations. Necessary investigations are carried out by the Army, and unless he had done any offence, he will be released. The best option is wait and see the decision of authorized institutes and persons”, the Minister added.
