Update on MDP, DRP membership numbers due tomorrow- EC
Midst a tight race between the ruling MDP and the opposition DRP to outnumber each others membership, the Elections Commission is set to release an update on the new figures tomorrow.
“We are hoping to release an update [of DRP, MDP membership] by Thursday,” President of the Elections Commission Fuwad Thowfeeq told the Asian Tribune yesterday.
Recently the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party outnumbered the membership of the opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party -- which was the largest political party in the Maldives till then.
The MDP recorded a membership of 31,171 narrowly beating the DRP’s figure of 30,775.
The MDP then attributed the increase in the numbers to its “hard work” but the DRP blamed the Elections Commission over processing the MDP applications first, whilst 2000 odd DRP applications were pending.
Umar told the Asian Tribune earlier, the MDP became the largest political party in the Maldives “only for 12 hours” up until the DRP’s new applications are processed.
Meanwhile, DRP Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali told early this week that that the party is set to increase its members to 40,000 within two months.
