By Anjana Jayashan in Colombo
Colombo, 11 March (asiantribune.com):

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Prof. G.L.Pieris said that the main Opposition; the United National Party or the Front has already accepted the defeat at the General Elections due on April 08.

The Minister, addressing the media at the weekly press briefing at the Government Information Department to brief the Cabinet decisions, said that the Opposition is only on a mission of preventing of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) receiving of two thirds majority at the elections.

“The Opposition is not to win the elections, not to make a regime of their own but only for short term political gains”, said Minister Pieris. “Anyway, the people of this country are ahead of than those politicians and they will definitely drive the present regime for a remarkable victory at the elections with a two thirds majority in the house”, he added.

Mr. Pieris further speaking over the issue said that the so-called common Opposition was no more and at present they had become the enemies making numerous allegations against each other. “The so-called common Opposition has only a short term political requirement of making a regime at that time. They did not have any concrete plan how to rule the country or provide necessary infrastructure development works for the country. We knew it and informed the general public. General public too realized the issue and they voted for the President Rajapaksa at the Presidential election without going out for opportunities for petty political needs.”

The Minister also said that the people of this country have a mission—with what they started with the Presidential elections, they are waiting to complete on April 08 at the General elections. “They have strengthened President Rajapaksa’s hands at the Presidential elections, and this time they would not hesitate to assist him in making a strong Parliament with a two thirds majority for the ruling Freedom Alliance”, Prof. Pieris added.

He further added that though the Rajapaksa led Freedom Alliance defeated the terrorism on Sri Lankan soil, its shadows are still haunting internationally and as a country we have to be vigilant over the behaviour of some parts of the international community and non Governmental organizations.
