Maldives In Brief : No single rape case taken to criminal court in four years

Not a single case of rape has been taken to the criminal court in four years, in the Maldives.

“However numerous cases have been reported to the police and several arrests made during this period of time,” Minivan news reported quoting the Judiciary’s website.

Meanwhile, former President of the Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has expressed concern over “false information” being spread by Islamic scholars in the country concerning women’s rights.

There was “no religious justification” for the inequality of women and that Islam “does not limit a woman’s equal rights in society,” Gayoom told a ceremony marking the International Women’s day, Minivan news said.

Alhan urges sacking Adhaalath from Cabinet

The ruling MDP parliamentarian Alhan Fahmy has called on the government to sack the Adhaalath members from the cabinet if they continue to intimidate the Nasheed administration, Miadhu reported.

Alhan said “it is a responsibility of the Adhaalathu Party to work with the government as they pledged to do so,” according to Miadhu.

The Adhaalath party holding the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in the government has proved to be an uneasy coalition partner in the Nasheed administration, of late.

The party comprising religious scholars backed President Nasheed in the second round of presidential polls in October 2008.

Despite the coalition, the party has strongly criticized the government over normalizing ties with Israel and regulations on the sale of alcohol and pork in inhabited islands, prompting the government to withdraw the rules.

Rahul Mahajan to get passport to visit Maldives for honeymoon

The son of slain BJP leader Pramod Mahajan and Indian reality TV star, Rahul Mahajan was allowed by a Delhi court to get back his passport to visit the Maldives for honeymoon.

”Mahajan, who was arrested on June 5, 2006 under various provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, has been on bail in the case since June 14 that year,” PTI reported

“The court asked him to furnish a fixed deposit of Rs. five lakh and a personal bond of same amount for the release of his passport, which was deposited while he was granted bail in a pending drug abuse case against him,” PTI said.

Rahul also has given an undertaking to the court that he will not indulge in any type of shooting during his honeymoon period from March 9 to 30, according to PTI.

The 35 year old Mahajan got married on Saturday to 21 year old Dimpy Ganguly, in a television show.

HRCM issues annual report 2009

The Human Rights Council of the Maldives has released its annual report for 2009, assessing the country’s health sector as well as the issue of human trafficking amongst many others.

At a news conference held on Tuesday, HRCM President Ahmed Saleem also called on the government to draft necessary laws to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, Miadhu newspaper reported.
