Maldives: Nasheed govt. committed to address challenges than Gayoom’s regime - US

Male, 16 March, (Asiantribune.com):

Butenis2.jpgComparing the Nasheed administration with that of the previous Gayoom regime, the United States has said the former shows greater commitment in addressing the country’s challenges.

US Ambassador to the Maldives Patricia A. Butenis was quoted as saying in Miadhu that “she understands the challenges that are present but at least the government is working to address them.

She added:“The previous administration had not showed such a commitment.”
Butenis has also praised President Mohamed Nasheed’s government for its “spirit of listening to the international community.”

However her endorsement of the current government was not without concerns, according to the news report.

The Ambassador urged the government to work on issues of “copyrights, labor rights, including the implementation of the current laws and regulations and also standardizing those laws and regulations with international best practices,” Miadhu added.

The US did nothing to

The US did nothing to "establish democracy" in the Maldives. It was an achievement entirely by the people of the Maldives and President Gayoom who facilitated such a transfer or assist that country.

The Maldives must be careful to not let their country be over run by Western NGOs and end up with themselves to slowly without awareness be forced to submit to the Wests hegemony.
