Iran to host Group 15 Summit in May.

The Ambassador of Iran, Mahmud Rahimi Gorji on Tuesday, handed over to Foreign Minister Rothitha Bogollagama, the invitation addressed to President Mahinda Rajapaksa by President Ahamadinejad for his participation in the Group of 15 Summit to be held in Tehran from 17 – 18 May 2010.

The G15, a group of 17 developing countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America, was set up to foster cooperation and provide input for other international groups, such as the World Trade Organization and the Group of Seven rich industrialized nations.

The G15 is comprised of Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Nigeria, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Venezuela and Zimbabwe

Mahmud Rahimi Gorji, Ambassador of Iran who met the Sri Lanka Foreign Minister conveyed the appreciation of the Government of Iran for Sri Lanka’s contribution to the G 15 process.

President Rajapaksa is due to take over from President Ahamadinejad the Chairmanship of the Group of 15 during the forthcoming meeting in Tehran.

The Foreign Minister told the Ambassador of Iran that Sri Lanka looked forward to leading the Group, with the support of all members, to advance the G-15 Agenda. He also complimented Iran for its continued, effective leadership of the Group.
