DRP to bring in no-confidence motion against Home minister
The opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has vowed to put forward a no-confidence motion against Home Minister Mohamed Shihab over “indiscriminate attacks by police targeting their supporters.”
“The DRP Parliamentary Group has resolved to table a motion in Parliament to seek a vote of no-confidence against Home Minister Mohamed Shihab,” the party said in a statement.
The party strongly condemned “brutal and indiscriminate attack by the Police on opposition supporters” Thursday night.
It accused the Police of turning a “blind eye towards the ruling party thugs’ infringement following orders from the government.”
For days in a row, Parliamentary sessions have ended up in chaos, midst a debate on misappropriation of funds by the Auditor General.
A vote of no-confidence against Auditor General Ibrahim Naeeem is now due in the House.
Chaos in the chamber also spilled into the streets, when opposition DRPers held protest calling for the parliamentary debate to continue.
And the party now has pledge to hold “nightly rallies in the capital Male’ until the
ruling party allow the scheduled parliamentary debates on the impeachment of the Auditor-General to proceed as scheduled.”
However, the President’s office said the opposition is “hysterical and overzealous” on impeaching the Auditor General as he published reports implicating many DRPers.
Press Secretary to the President’s office Mohamed Zuhair earlier told the Asian Tribune that the DRP “accuse Naeem of having used his corporate credit card to buy a tie and expended $400 on a personal transport.”
Meanwhile, the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party too is set to put forward a no-confidence motion against Speaker Abdullah Shahid who is a DRP MP.
The move is being considered as parliamentary sessions are being cancelled due to disagreements between ruling party and opposition parliamentarians.
”We do not believe that a man under such pressure can do anything correctly,” MDP Parliamentary Group leader Mohamed Shifaz was quoted as saying in Minivan news.
He accused Shahid of siding with the opposition coalition “most of the time”.
