Film Actors who visit Sri Lanka should not be threatened- South Indian Film Artists Association

Sathyalaya Ramakrishnan reporting from Chennai
Chennai, 26 July, (Asiantribune.com):

The South Indian Film Artists' Association (SIFAA) has said that the film actors who visit Sri Lanka for the purpose of shooting or rehabilitating displaced Tamils should not be threatened by others.

The SIFAA also held that artists are merely workers and should not be held responsible for the profit or loss incurred by theaters.

At its 58th general body meeting here on Sunday, which was attended by a large number of factors, including the Association president Sarath Kumar and secretary Radha Ravi, the members discussed several issues, including visiting Sri Lanka and helping the displaced Tamils there.

A debate on whether action should be taken on actors who travel to Sri Lanka was settled by passing a resolution that the association “strongly objected” to actors being threatened or criticized through the media for personal trips made by some of them to Sri Lanka.

The members also resolved that in future, a trip to that country (Sri Lanka) by artistes would be decided after a conference with the members of the various associations.

“An actor does not have anything to do with the business of screening films. Theatre owners cannot threaten actors with defamation cases and take them to court or seek compensation for losses incurred,” association resolved.

Stand by the Indian Governments Decision

“In the Sri Lanka issue, we will follow the stand of the Central and State governments and offer our support to the displaced Tamils there,” SIFAA Secreetary Radha Ravi said.

“The south Indian actors are part of the association. If actors have problems they should approach the association and get their grievance redressed. We object to artistes being threatened. If actors inform the association about their projects we would be able to help them in case of problems,” Mr. Radha Ravi added.

“We have requested that all artistes become members of the association latest by August 15.” Membership would help the association to discuss problems and issues with the Producers Council, he said.

Use the India-Sri Lanka Test Series to Erase the Misconceptions

The Tourism Authority, Sri Lanka Cricket Board and Sri Lankan Airlines should provide a promotion for the people in Tamil speaking areas to visit Sri Lanka to watch the Third Test Match. They should have the option of visiting the North to participate in a suitable resettlement & rehabilitation activity. In addition, they can be offered a tour of the Ramayana Trail.

The Ramayana is based on Hindu religious beliefs and the Buddhists in Sri Lanka should accept it in the same way the Hindus in Northern India accept the development of Buddhist sites in India. Religious Tourism is an important segment of tourism.
