Male, 08 September, (Asiantribune.com):

raja_mald_.jpgMaldives President Mohamed Nasheed revealed that he will request Sri Lankan President Rajapakse to intervene again-‘if necessary’.

He also stressed that President Rajapakse helped both himself and the Opposition Leader Ahmed Thasmeen ‘to get on the track’ during last July’s political crisis.

Speaking to the AT team, President Nasheed said “President Rajapaksa is very close to me. He understands that we are going through the early challenges of democracy. His advice to both myself and Thasmeen helped us get on the track. If necessary, I will ask him again to intervene. But I feel it could be worked out”.

On July 6, President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Maldives on the invitation of President Nasheed to help resolve the archipelago’s political impasse.

Rajapakse met with the Leader of the opposition & DRP MP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and the former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, at Gayoom’s residence called ‘Maafannu Aliwaage.’
