Lalin’s Column: Not this time David
Kumar David (KD) in his normal jaundiced style that supports his theories on SL that he calls GOSL (as though anyone had heard of GOUSA, GOUK, GOB, GOD, GOT GOW GOZ) in order that something now in the dust bin called the LTTE could be re cycled. He has gone crackers with the US comments on its over paid, under worked minions work, called the UNSG’s report on SL.
A well known element in SL thrives on the hope that the majority can at any time be inveigled to go berserk in its opposition to the incumbent government. KD jumped the gun this time, again. The majority of the people of SL were never in two minds as to what the LTTE deserved. In May 2009 it happened. Hopes however fleeting of reversing the impact of that event kept some in fanciful if not feverish and breathless anticipation. The report was manna for them even if it was from the tainted UNSG’s office. Moon is as called ’slippery eel’.
KD fondly but grossly in error imagined the Opposition JVP and the UNP would be pleased with the SG’s report. This is also the only reason that KD has had time for them. Both however spontaneously closed ranks with the people and their clergy in an unprecedented manner. (There had been mulish criticism by the UNP of the military in 2007-8). They both saw that the UNSG’s report, despite the camouflage and concealment of its actual aims and objectives, was mainly directed at the Armed Forces of SL which defeated the bestial LTTE that caused 100,000 deaths and kept everyone in fear of life and limb for 30 years.
The JVP and UNP rejected any hopes that KD had for them. They expressed their displeasure and anger publicly, with conviction. KD may have thought it fit to forget that the two were constituent parties of a democratic parliament of SL, some of whose members including a President, a Presidential candidate, Ministers and MPs were assassinated by the LTTE. One President survived a suicide attack.
They would not countenance the challenge to SL’s sovereignty that had been under threat from the LTTE, whatever differences it had with the governing PA. KD and his ilk had a short lived romance with the JVP before they were pulled up short by their unshakable nationalist beliefs.
A very small percentage of Tamil well wishers still hoped the country could be broken up into LTTE and ‘GOSL’ parts. KD may know them. The LTTE has much more support overseas mainly from former boat people called refugees. Many of them had a whale of a time living on the dole and the blood money extracted from poor Tamils in the North. They did not mind being regarded as second or third class citizens in the countries of their adoption. They had hoped one day to come back to SL and live in their birth places armed with certificates and photos of their participation at demos and attempted suicides from the LTTE overseas to pursue their claims. They are now almost driven almost to madness that they stand little chance of making any claim to absentee hero status and what may have been their property before. That was one of the hidden agendas of the SG’s reports probably paid for by the Diaspora Tamils, despite its cry baby packaging.
KD has however hit the nail on the head with his hopes for the TNA. It not only supported the LTTE but was the LTTE’s sole, chosen political front. They confirmed that support by welcoming the report. They will have to live with that.
I wish KD a very happy new year reading all the well rewarded, sweeping and boring Diaspora allegations in the UNSG’s report. Here again he must know that there is nothing in it that people here did not know beforehand-like he did, or believed.
