Sri Lanka: SC informed steps taken for election to Sri Lanka Cricket
Attorney General yesterday (6) informed the Supreme Court yesterday (6) the Sports Minister has made a public announcement to hold the election for the appointment of officials to the Sri Lanka Cricket.
Deputy Solicitor General Shavindra Fernando with Senior State Counsel Nerin Pulle told the Court that steps have been taken to hold an election.
As no firm date for the said election has yet been announced, the Counsel for the Petitioner moved for time to consider whether to proceed with the rights application.
In the circumstances, the panel of judges of the Supreme Court consisting of Justices N.G.Amaratunga, P.A.Ratnayake and Chandra Ekanayake fixed for mention on November 28
The Petitioner M.S.Asoka Mendis is the President of the United Southern Cricket Club. He cited D.S.De Silva (Chairman), Nishantha Ranatunga(Secretary), Sujeeva Rajapaksha (Treasurer), Kalinga N. Indatissa, Prabhath Fonseka, Asanga Chandana Seneviratne all of the Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket(SLC), SLC Acting CEO Ajith Jayasekera, SLC Head of Cricket Operations Ashley de Silva, Sports Minister C.B.Ratnayake and the Attorney General as Respondents.
The Petitioner seeks for the elections of office-bearers without permitting Sri Lanka Cricket to be continuously run by a ‘Interim Committee’.
Denzil Gunaratne PC with Buddhika Jayasinghe, Viran Corea and Sarita de Fonseka instructed by Udayanthi Seniviratne appeared for the Petitioner.
Meanwhile it is to be taken into cognizance that new Interim Committee is, at present, in operation in place of the earlier one.
