APPOINTMENT OF MILITARY LEADERS TO WESTERN CAPITALS

REVIEW THE POLICY OF APPOINTING MILITARY LEADERS TO WESTERN CAPITALS

The former military officers appointed by Sri Lanka as ambassadors to USA, Switzerland and Australia are being used by the Tamil Diaspora to file law suits, using their close connections to the politicians and Human Rights organisations. These law suits provide Tamil Diaspora the required publicity to persuade the people of these western countries that Sri Lanka is indeed guilty of the charges levelled in the Darusman Report.

These ex-military officers do not have the networks available to good career diplomats to influence the media and the opinion leaders among the diplomats. Their appointments do not help the process of reconciliation between the Tamil Diaspora and our embassies in countries with high concentrations of Tamils. Transfers of retired military officers to countries without high concentrations of Tamil Diaspora will help to defuse this situation. Better late than never!
