When to celebrate a death: Prabhakaran and Qaddafi – West’s hypocrisy

Comments

Gaddafi and Prabhakaran

Th Economist article, quotes Jehan Perera, whose opinion on Sri Lankan matters is sought regularly by Western media, as saying ".... Western governments have been willing to have alleged abuses investigated............Sri Lanka by contrast has tolerated no independent and credible inquiry into the end of its civil war."

My question to Jehan Perera is:
When did the Western governments have independent, international investigations conducted on matters associated with their military activities? As far as I know, investigations if any, into suspected HR offenses by the West's military have been solely 'internal'.
And this is exactly what Sri Lanka's government is doing by having an 'internal' Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) look into the conduct of the war.
But an 'international investigation' is what the HR organizations and Western governments are demanding of Sri Lanka. That's a Double Standard!
As for credibility...it's a a highly subjective matter, and one man's credibility would be another's suspicion. So what is hoped to be achieved???

Come on, now. Shouldn't a

Come on, now. Shouldn't a Ph.D. from the University of London know better? In the U.S.for instance, whether it was the My Lai massacre, or the Abu Gharib (spelling?) disgrace, and in numerous other similar cases, the relevant U.S. authorities have conducted impartial internal investigations and meted out appropriate punishment.

Anyone who thinks that Sri Lanka is anywhere close to this level of professionalism is living in a dream-world.

We did enjoy a high level of professionalism until the late 1950s. Since then, it has been a steady slide downhill.

C'mon Thamby7!

C'mon Thamby7 - you ought to know better! The US has had investigations on a few incidents...not on weeks of war as they are expecting Sri Lanka to do!
And as analogy I had quoted the last weeks of WWII when Germany and Japan were attacked to finish off the war. So let's talk apples and apples, NOT apples and oranges, OK?

Abu Ghraib Punishment?

People got to be smoking something if they think that the real leaders of Abu Ghraib got punished. In stead, they just found a few scapegoats.
