Sri Lanka’s former Deputy Minister of Defense General Anuruddha Ratwatte has passed away

anuruddha_ratwatte_0.jpgSri Lanka's former deputy Defense Minister during President Chandrika Kumaratunga's administration General Anuruddha Ratwatte passed away this morning at Kandy Hospital.

The 73-year-old former Minister of Power and Energy has been hospitalized after a fall in his home in Kandy. He was on a life support system at the Intensive Care Unit for head injuries received from the fall.

General Anuruddha Ratwatte is the father of current Kandy district ruling party Parliamentarian Mr. Lohan Ratwatte.

General Ratwatte has also served as the Acting Diyawadana Nilame (Chief lay Custodian) of the Temple of the Tooth Kandy. He is the son of Harris Leuke Ratwatte who was a former Diyawadana Nilame of Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy and former United National Party Member of Parliament for Mawanella.

It was under the Deputy Minister of Defense Col(later General) Ratwatte’s purview that in 1995 Jaffna town and the Jaffna peninsula was liberated from the Tiger Terrorists.
