This doesn't resembles the character of Egyptian people

By S.H.Moulana - Riyadh

The well known Israeli journalist, Uri Avenery, in one of his recent articles, paid rich tribute for Egyptian people for their non aggressiveness and the ever present humor in them.

He showed this as one of the reasons for the extremely low casualty figures during the recent uprising in Egypt. I fully endorse his views since I have personally experienced the friendliness of the Egyptians during my visits to that great country, the oldest civilization on earth. However, the football violence in Port Said has really shocked not only the Arab world but the entire globe.

The death toll could beat or has beaten what was recorded during the Egyptian uprising. This is unfortunate and deeply saddening.

They say this is the biggest disaster in the country’s football history and a match between two clubs Al- Masry and Al-Ahly shouldn’t have cost the lives of dozens of their fans.

In the meantime, few observed that the tragedy at Port Said is planned and is a message from the remnants of the former regime. The football fans are bewildered as to how such a senseless massacre could take place on a field meant for sport.

This is absolutely uncharacteristic of the Egyptian people, who are fun lovers by nature. This is a black day for football in Egypt and what happened during this match between two formidable clubs is unimaginable and we pray that it should not happen anywhere in the future.
