Nasheed is neither Assad nor Gaddafi
I am sure all the right thinking Maldivians will be feeling sorry to see their first democratically elected president, Nasheed, has resigned from his presidency. He is neither Assad of Syria nor Gaddafi of Libya to cling on to power at the cost of the lives of his own people.
He wasted no time in resigning his job and handing over power to the vice president. Although the silent majority appreciated the reforms he introduced in the country, the anti- democratic minority did not. The former dictator, Abdul Gayyoom, and his cronies are suspected to be behind the week long protests, to topple the democratically elected leader.
Before Nasheed was elected president the poor Maldivians depended on the mercy of the rich to pay their medical bills but the first democratically elected president introduced a free medical service for his people. He also introduced public transport and better housing for the poor. It is sad to note that all his hard work will go down the drain. The one who is taking over now does not belong to Nasheed’s political party and doesn’t seem to have the political vision as the dynamic Nasheed.
In his very latest interview, he said that he will not leave his country, an act he thinks that will tantamount to letting down his people and party. We believe that he has the strong backing of the majority of the Maldivians. In his own language; we don't want Maldives to go to dogs.
Nasheed did more to Maldives in his three years in power than the former dictator, Abdul Gayyoom did in his thirty years, which he ruled with an iron fist. Gentleman Nasheed didn’t want any bloodshed in his country and it was really praiseworthy of him to step down. I am absolutely sure that the Maldivians, especially those behind this protest, will soon realize their mistake.
The present president who has taken over from Nasheed looks incapable and a puppet in the hands of the manipulators of this coup.
We hundred percent approve the call made by the editor of Asian Tribune for SAARC involvement in this hour of need.

I agree with the writer of
I agree with the writer of the article entitled "Nasheed is neither Assad nor Gaddafi". He acted and proved that he was humane by resigning himself from the highest post that he was holding for a short period. However, the history has proved that people who are very sensitive to humanity do not want to stay in power. I think this is what Nasheed also has proved again.
