Mining mafia behind killing of IPS officer, charges Congress leader

From R. Vasudevan—Reporting from New Delhi
New Delhi, 10 March (Asian

AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Friday observed that murder of IPS officer Narendra Kumar Singh, allegedly by a suspected member of the mining mafia, was a well-planned conspiracy.

"I have no doubt in my mind that the killing of the IPS officer is not a stray incident," he said in Bhopal. Seeking to downplay the Madhya Pradesh government's decision to order a judicial probe into the incident, Singh said "nothing much should be read into it".

The 30-year-old IPS officer was allegedly mowed down yesterday by a suspected mining mafia member at Banmore in Morena district when he tried stopping a tractor-trolley carrying stones. "If Madhya Pradesh government is so serious about inquiring into illegal mining, (then) it should order a probe into all instances of illegal quarrying spanning last 18 years," Singh said, adding the eighteen years include ten years when he was chief minister and eight years of BJP rule since 2003.

Condemning the killing of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Narendra Kumar Singh, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Friday said illegal mining was rampant in Madhya Pradesh and demanded stern action against the menace. "My condolences are with the family that has lost its son. Narendra Kumar was a young IPS officer. His wife was a district officer in my area. She had incurred the wrath of a BJP MLA because of which she was transferred out of Rajgarh district," Singh told media here.

Asserting that BJP leaders are involved in this case, Singh said: "Why aren't they auctioned ((Minerals) and given lease?. Who all are involved and have been benefited by this should be brought to book. We will provide all the proof that we have. This should be investigated."

The incident took place yesterday afternoon when Singh, who was patrolling the area in his official jeep, noticed a tractor-trolley loaded with stones following which he overtook it and signalled the driver to stop it. But the tractor driver drove on and knocked down the 30-year-old officer, who was crushed under the wheels.
