Sri Sabaratnam - The former TELO Leader, remembered on his 26th Death Anniversary

Sri Sabaratnam, the former leader of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO), who was brutally murdered by the LTTE on 06 May, some 26 years ago, was remembered yesterday by the TELO members.

The Executive Committee Member of TELO, N. Sri Kantha speaking to Asian Tribune, said that they held yesterday a simple ceremony on Sabaratnam’s Remembrance Day, at the TELO Party Headquarters in Trincomallee.

He said that members of TELO participated in the simple ceremony in the honor of the martyred TELO Leader Sri Sabaratnam.

According to Sri Kantha, the TELO President Selvam Adaikkalanathan is away in France participating in Sri Sabaratnam Remembrance Day ceremony, organized by the TELO supporters in France. He also said that M.K.Sivajilingham, the TELO Political Leader also did not participate in yesterday’s event, as he was engaged in another prior committed event in Valvetiturai.

Earlier, Sri Sabaratnam succeeded the TELO founding leader Thangathurai. He and his two lieutenants - Kuddimani and Jagan, along with a total of 35 Tamil political prisoners were brutally murdered at the maximum security prisons at Welikade on 25 July 1983, by Sinhalese thugs orchestrated by President J.R. Jayawardene’s Government.

Again on 27 July 1983 another 18 Tamil political prisoners were done with at the same Welikade Maximum Security Prisons, by the Sinhalese prisoners and said to be again orchestrated by President Jayawardene’s Government.

After the demise of Thangathurai, Sri Sabaratnam took over the leadership of TELO and he was also murdered by the LTTE at a fratricidal war initiated by LTTE. At the time of his death he was 33 years old.

Selvam Adaikkalanathan succeeded Sri Sabaratnam as the leader of the TELO and after the Indo Sri Lanka Accord of July 1987, TELO renounced its militancy and entered the democratic mainstream of the country.

Today TELO is one of the five constituent political parties of the Tamil National Alliance led by R.Sampanthan with 2 elected parliamentarians.

When speaking to Asian Tribune , Sri Kantha said that the TELO has decided to hold a public Remembrance Day meeting on 13 May at Trincomalle.

He said that the leaders of the TNA’s constituent political parties , the TNA Leader R. Sampanthan, V. Ananthasangaree Leader of the TULF , D. Siththarrthan, Leader of the PLOTE, and Suresh Premachandra leader of the EPRLF are expected to participate in the public meeting to be organized by TELO in Trincomallee.
