Select Committee to probe Chief justice set in motion
The Special Parliament Select Committee (PSC) to probe the impeachment charges against Chief Justice Dr Shirani Bandaranayake met yesterday for the first time.
The PSC will inquire into the charges contained in the impeachment motion presented against the Chief Justice and will report to Parliament in a month time.
Earlier, the Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced yesterday morning in the parliament, appointing Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa as Chairman of the Special Parliament Select Committee (PSC) to probe impeachment charges against Chief Justice Dr Shirani Bandaranayake.
The first sitting of the PSC was held at the Parliament complex yesterday evening under the chairmanship of Minister Anura Yapa. All members of the committee had attended the meeti.
According to the Standing Orders of Parliament and the Constitution, matters discussed during the sittings could not be revealed to the public.
Members of the UPFA in the committee including Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa are Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva, Susil Premajayantha, Rajitha Senaratne, Dilan Perera, Wimal Weerawansa and Deputy Minister Neomal Perera.
In addition, Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga, MP Lakshman Kiriella will represent the UNP, the DNA by MP Vijitha Herath and the TNA by MP R Sampanthan.
