Tamil Youths Joining Sri Lankan Army
A group of 100 Tamil girls will be joining the Army during a ceremony scheduled to be held at Bharathipuram, Killinochchi on Saturday, 17 Nov 2012.
When Asian Tribune contacted Army Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya, he said that there are already Tamils in the ranks of Brigadiers as well as Major General and Tamils are continuously joining the army in very small numbers, but he said that this is the first time Tamil youths are joining in big numbers.
He said that these young girls will be enlisted in the Volunteer Force of the Sri Lanka Army and be assigned to serve under 6th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps.
After initial military training, they would be assigned for duties in Killinochchi and Mullaitivu districts and it is hoped that they will facilitate the ongoing military civil cooperation activities in the areas.
The ceremony on the 17th, where parents of the young ladies will formally hand them over to the Army, has been organized as per Tamil and Hindu customs and traditions.
