Arrested 37 Indian fishermen remanded till 10 December
The 37 Indian Fishermen from Nagapattinam and Karaikal from Tamil Nadu, who were arrested on Sunday early morning, while poaching near Pulmoddai in the Eastern sea region were yesterday remanded till 10 December, by the Trincomalee Acting Magistrate.
Earlier these Indian fishermen were taken into custody together with their five fishing trawlers.
The Magistrate also ordered the Assistant Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to sell the fish that had been caught by the Indian fishermen and deposit the money in court.
The Sri Lankan Navy was instructed to detain the trawler.
Harbour Police OIC, Chief Inspector Upali B. Narampanawa, under the direction of ASP Aruna Prema Shantha, deployed policemen to record the statements given by the arrested fishermen.
It was revealed during the primary investigations that their boats had drifted into the Sri Lankan Maritime Zone due to there having been strong winds at that time.
