Academic activities of the Jaffna University commenced smoothly

Colombo, 09 January, (Asiantribune.com):

Academic activities of the Jaffna University have commenced from yesterday. About 20 % of the students attended the University.

Earlier, on the 7th of January, Ms. Vasanthy Arasaratnam , the Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University had meeting with faculty deans, lecturers, student counselors and student leaders and it had been agreed to begin the academic activities from 8th January.

According to University sources, as yesterday was the first day academic activities commenced after the disruption of studies for two months and majority of the students, more than 60 % are from outside Jaffna district and it might take few more days for all the students to attend the University in full capacity.

University sources said that Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake and Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda had earlier indicated that in case the academic activities commence and the university functions smoothly, both of them will take actions for the release of the 4 university students who are presently held by the Military at the Welikantha rehabilitation centre.

The four students who are held at the rehabilitation centre are - V. Bavananthan, P. Tharshananth, K.Janamaejaynth, and S. Solomon, who are presently held in the Welikanda Rehabilitation Centre, and they also had reportedly requested their colleagues to attend lectures stating that the authorities had promised them that they would be released soon.
