Sri Lanka at Lions Club Anniversary at the UN

United Nations, 15 March, ( Sri Lanka took a leading role in the 30th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations held on 14th March at the UN Headquarters in New York, as this year’s event was presided by a Sri Lankan, Mahendra Amarasuriya, President of the International Association of Lions Clubs for 2007-2008, with the patronage of the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations.

Welcoming over 700 Lions on behalf of the member States of the UN, Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations thanked the Lions for electing a Sri Lankan as President of the 1.3 million strong Lions Clubs International.

Complimenting the Lions for heeding the call of their current International President in working with the UN towards realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), Ambassador Kariyawasam in his address to the Lions explained the achievements of Sri Lanka in reaching the targets set by the MDGs.

Mr. Amarasuriya, in his address stated that, with its presence in 202 geographic territories, the Lions have always contributed towards the aims and objectives of the UN.

Recalling that the Lions Clubs have worked side by side with the United Nations for over 60 years in pursuit of shared goals, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his Message that the UN continues to benefit from the efforts of Lions Club members around the world who are supporting the work of the UN and its Agencies to prevent disease, end poverty, promote education, empower women and protect the environment.
He expressed belief that together, the UN and Lions can make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable people across the world.

The UN Lions Day comprised of several social events that profiled Sri Lanka’s image as a country that has made significant strides in social and political progress among developing countries.
