Sri Lanka President in China to participate in the BOAO Conference

Beijing, 10 April, (Asiantribune.com): President Mahinda Rajapaksa who arrived at Sanya Phoenix International Airport yesterday morning was received by Mr. Yang Jiechi, Foreign Minister of China, Mr. Jiang Sixian, Vice Governor of Hainan Province, Mr. Dabo Ye, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Mr. K. Amunugama, Sri Lankan Ambassador to China. Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived in China to participate in the BOAO Forum Annual Conference to be held in Hainan from April 11 to 13. At the airport, President Rajapaksa was given guard of honor by the Chinese Combined Armed Services and was also received by a large number of flag and flower waving Chinese youth.

The President was accompanied by Export Development and International Trade Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Foreign Secretary Dr. Palitha Kohona. A press release issued by the Presidential Media Unit said the BOAO was established in 2001 to enable leaders of the Asian Region to engage in a regional level dialogue and build an integrated economic plan for the region.

The theme of this year's conference is 'Towards a Greener Asia'. Chinese President Hu Jintao will inaugurate the conference, attended by Asian leaders including Presidents of Pakistan, Mongolia, Chile and Prime Minister of Australia, Prime Minister of Sweden, President of Chile, President of the United Republic of Tanzania , President of Mongolia, Prime Minister of Qatar and also Colin Powell, Former US Secretary of State.

President Rajapaksa will deliver a special address at the conference.

According to sources, on the sidelines of the Conference, President Rajapaksa will hold bilateral discussions with the Chinese leader focusing on wide range of issues pertaining to development of Sri Lanka. The leaders will also discuss the possibilities of improving trade and business relations between the two countries.

“This will be the second meeting between the two leaders in 14 months, and is indicative of the strengthened links between the two countries, and the rapid emergence of China as one a key development partner of Sri Lanka,” President’s Media Unit stated.

China has already pledged more that US $ 1 billion in assistance to Sri Lanka in 2007 for projects that include the Norochcholai Coal Power Project, the Hambantota Port Development Project, the supply of 100 railway carriages and Multiple Diesel Units to the Sri Lanka Railway and the construction of a Performing Arts Theatre, sources added.China's children lined up to receive President Mahinda Rajapaksa (Pictures by Sudath Silva.)China's children lined up to receive President Mahinda Rajapaksa (Pictures by Sudath Silva.)

In the meantime it is expected Sri Lanka President will be meeting Fredrik Reinfeldt, Prime Minister of Sweden on the sidelines of the Conference. They are expected to have bilateral discussions and it is also said that President Rajapakse would be briefing the developments in Sri Lanka after withdrawing from the ceasefire agreement entered with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Sri Lanka terrorist outfit.
