UPFA to launch house to house campaign in the provincial council elections

Colombo, 21 April, ( In the forthcoming East Provincial Council election, United Peoples Freedom Alliance will win in the elections comfortably. As far as the Tamils are concerned it is expected that they will vote overwhelmingly for Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal. Minister Susil Premajayantha said that from today onwards UPFA in the Batticaloa district would start house to house campaign.Minister Susil Premajayantha said that from today onwards UPFA in the Batticaloa district would start house to house campaign.

Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Education and General Secretary of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance was in Batticaloa yesterday to oversee the election campaign in the district.

When Asian Tribune contacted him over the telephone, he was in his motorcar going back to Colombo.

In an interview with Asian Tribune Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the situation in the Batticaloa district was peaceful. He said that TMVP would win 8 out of the nine seats they are contesting the Batticaloa district and revealed that in total, TMVP alone would win 14 seats in the Provincial Council election in all the three districts.

In the meantime, Asian Tribune’s survey revealed that UPFA would comfortably win 25 seats in the East Provincial Council elections.

Susil Premajayantha when contacted said that from today onwards UPFA will launch in the Batticaloa district the house to house campaign.

Given below the excerpts of the interview with Minister Susil Premajayantha:

Asian Tribune: I want to talk with you about the elections in the East, specially about Batticaloa District, as you are in charge of the Batticaloa district election campaign on behalf of the ruling party – United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA.)

Susil Premajayantha: Now I am returning from Batticaloa.

Asian Tribune : How is the situation in the Batticaloa district?

Susil Premajayantha: Batticaloa situation is very peaceful at present except for the one tragic incident about that you would all have read in the newspapers as one TMVP political cadre named Sudarsan was shot dead in Kalkuda, Batticaloa.

Except for that incident, I was there in Batticaloa today, and we were not informed about any other incidents.

The UPFA of course is starting house to house campaign from tomorrow onwards (today 21 March) in the Batticaloa district. We have already sent all our propaganda literatures in Tamil and the committees of the UPFA set up for each and every polling station will take charge of the house to house propaganda campaign.

As far as my assessment about Batticaloa district is concerned, I can assure you that TMVP can clearly win 8 seats out of the 9 seats it is contesting in the district. Also I know that all their three candidates in Trincomalee and the other three candidates in the Amparai district are very strong and are very popular candidates and there is a chance for all those six candidates also winning in those two districts.

Asian Tribune: In case TMVP wins 14 seats as you now predicted in the Provincial Council elections, is there an opportunity for Pillaiyan the TMVP leader becoming the Chief Minister?

Susil Premajayantha: That of course we have already anounced that if any group within the UPFA wins the highest number of seats, then the leader of the group would become the Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council.

When speaking about UPFA winning the Eastern Provincial Council, I must say even today when I was in Batticaloa, I was interrupted by Asura FM Radio who interviewed me over the telephone on UNP parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardne visiting Oslo and London and they referred to the news item which appeared in the Asian Tribune, stating that Dr. Jayalath Jayawrdene meeting some of the LTTE people in Oslo, as well as in London. But Dr. Jayalath Jayawaedene denied the news report. He also said that this is of course a false story. But I just indicated that when I was interrupted regarding news report that Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene was in Paris on 10 of April. I was in Paris for the UNESCO meeting and I left Paris on 10 April, and on the same day he arrived in Paris and I said that there was the possibility of him going to Oslo as well as to London and meet the people as said in the Asian Tribune.

Asian Tribune:Our news report said that Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene was in Oslo and on his way back had a stop over in London along with V.Gopalasamy, the maverick Indian pro-LTTE leader of the Marumalarchchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Susil Premajayantha : I see I see .. so Vaiko was there with him?

Asian Tribune: Both were there. They were there and they both were received by the LTTE and they were treated by the LTTE. And their food and accommodation were taken care by the LTTE in London.

Susil Premajayantha : I see. You know sometime in the year 2003, we a group of parliamentarians went to Geneva and we spent there about 10 days. At that time, we were in the Opposition and Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene was the Minister who led our parliamentarians group to Geneva. And we knew from there that he had lot of connections with ‘Boys. ‘

You know all those Ministers and political leaders who are assigned to work in the Provincial Councils election in all the three districts are now there in those districts and campaigning for our UPFA candidates. But we found that the UNP is simply boasting and creating a situation you know, but so far we have not come across any UNPers in the field involved in the election campaign works in the East.

According to our survey we will win hands down in the Provincial Council elections.
