Earlier it was reported that Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Italy met with the officials in the Vatican and made representation about the Madhu Church and appealed to them to prevail on the Bishop of Mannar to reinstall the Virgin Mary’s statute in the original place in the Madhu Church.

Dr. Keheliya Rambukkawella, Minister of Foreign Employment, Promotion and Welfare & Government Spokesman for Defence and National Security emphasized that Sri Lanka Government is very much concerned. "We think it is the Mannar Bishop who is responsible for the reinstallation of the statute of Virgin Mary back in the Madhu Church."

He added, "We are also making all arrangements by talking to the relevant authorities regarding this issue of reinstalling the statute."

When the Minister commenting about the Eastern Provincial Council elections, said that it could be interpreted as government asking for a mandate from the people of the East to continue with the development works in the East.

About the house maid Rizana Nafeek in Saudi Arabia, he said, "we have made representation. You know that we make representation in the form of a written submission, there are no oral arguments there, and so far we have not heard anything further than that."

When Asian Tribune pointed out that in Qatar it seems that LTTE cadres over there are trying to fleece funds from the Sri Lanka expatriates workers, Dr. Keheliya Rambukkawella said, "Our Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hussain Bhaila, who was there recently had brought this matter to the notice of the authorities."

He added, "This has been there for sometime and there has been earlier a murder also in Qatar. A Tamil expatriate worker was killed by suspected LTTE cadres."

The Minister said that he also has met the Minister of Labor, Social Welfare and Interior in Qatar and had some discussions regarding those matters. He said, "They are very much concerned and they are showing interest in ending this menace in their country."

When talking about those ex-combatants who surrendered to the Government, he said that, "We are making a comprehensible program. We are talking to them and also we are looking at the concern of those interested in foreign employments. We are trying to train them in the fields they are interested and find them employment after the basic training is over. We have set up two training centres, one in Trincomalee and another in Batticaloa, and in case if the surrendees safety is threatened, we might bring them outside the Eastern province for training."

Minister said, "About those LTTE cadres surrendering in Jaffna, we are following the same procedure, but there the rehabilitation program of course would take place outside and we would train them as I mentioned, similar to those surrendered persons from the East and give them a livelihood."

Minister also said that, “We have already sent 11 people for employment in the Middle East and two of the surrendees to an East Asian country.”
