Special probe ordered over Kayts killings

By Our Colombo Correspondent

A special police investigation has been ordered into the killing of eight civilians, the members of an extended family in Kayts, Jaffna Saturday night.

“A special investigation is underway to get the correct picture of the whole incident. We will bring the killers to justice,” a senior Defence Ministry official told the Asian Tribune.

The Navy, which controls the islands, has denied the involvement, despite allegations by local civilians of a possible Navy involvement.

A middle level army officer told the “Asian Tribune” this incident would be a serious set back on the human right records of the security forces, stressing that the security forces should come up clean, nabbing the assassins and bringing them to justice.

“Targeting terrorists is one thing, but what happened last night was not that,” told the officer who under the condition of anonymity.

The Navy has, however, denied the involvement and said sailors heard an explosion followed by gunfire from the scene of the crime last night.

“We didn’t go to the scene as there are restrictions on our movement as roads had not been cleared. Next morning we cleared the road and assisted the police to go to the scene where they found several bodies,” a Naval officer told the “Asian Tribune.”
