Here is the text of the letter to the Indian President by (Retd.)Major General S.G.Vombatkere, VSM

Her Excellency The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil

Respected Madam,

It is with great pain and anguish that I have to report to you that there are happenings in Nandigram, West Bengal, that are comparable with the Gujarat pogrom of 2002 and pre-Independence British atrocities against Indians. These are criminal acts of sheer cruelty by depraved minds. In all these acts, it is women who are particularly targeted by humiliating and abusing, stripping and parading, beating, torturing and raping. Men are of course being beaten and killed regardless of age or health. Now even children are being beaten and molested. Of course all this is happening in Independent India in the Third Millennium for a “cause”.

The “cause” for these atrocities can be something simple like protesting against her husband and son being forcibly taken to join a CPI(M) procession, not voting for the CPI(M), not calling slogans in favor of CPI(M), refusing to give up land for the chemical hub SEZ envisioned by the CPI(M)-led West Bengal government in Nandigram, etc.

The violence in Nandigram and surrounding villages is not new, having been going on for over a year. But what is special about this is that the police are unable or unwilling to maintain law and order since the violence is being perpetrated by cadres of the ruling CPI(M) party, while the Government of West Bengal remains unable or unwilling to control the violence. (It may not be that the on-going violence is the design of the Government of West Bengal, so I put it down to incompetence or weakness. In any case, complicit or not, I believe that the Government of West Bengal deserves to be dismissed immediately and President’s rule imposed, if the insane but organised violence against defenceless village people is to stop).

I therefore appeal to you and urge you individually and severally, to urgently use the powers that are invested in your office by our Constitution of India in a manner that is most expedient to stop the on-going violence in Nandigram.

Yours faithfully,

Maj Gen S.G.Vombatkere (Retd)
