Tamil Nadu minister resigns trying to 'save a relative in corruption case

By Asian Tribune Special correspondent

Chennai, 14 May, (Asiantribune.com): Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna resigned May 14 in the wake of accusations that she had tried to influence a vigilance probe 'to save her relative' involved in a corruption case. She submitted her resignation to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi even as Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy and other opposition leader demanded her scalp.

Swamy released two days back an audio CD with a recording of a telephone conversation allegedly between Poongothai and the vigilance chief S.K.Upadhyay.

In the recording the minister was heard asking Upadhyay about a corruption case against her relative employed in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

Chief Minister Karunanidhi told the state assembly that the CID wing of the police would probe how the telephone conversations of ministers and officials were tapped.

He indicated that the Poongothai tapping incident could be referred to the Commission headed by the retired Madras High Court Justice P Shanmugam which is looking into the phone tapping incidents involving Chief Secretary and Upadhyaya on a case relating to AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa.
