Dhaka assured of continued WB support

Dhaka, 16 May, (INS + Asiantribune.com): World Bank Vice-President Praful C Patel yesterday reiterated the bank's continued support to Bangladesh's ongoing development efforts. The assurance came when Patel called on Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at her office.

Patel said the World Bank would extend its support, if necessary, to any infrastructure development in Bangladesh which would attract more foreign investors.

The prime minister thanked the World Bank for its support for various projects to help the country's development process and hoped such support would continue in the future.

Referring to the indications of growing foreign investment in Bangladesh, the WB vice president said many countries of the world now recognize Bangladesh as a good investment destination.

Bangladesh has achieved substantial progress under better economic management, he said.

Patel said in many sectors Bangladesh has achieved notable progress compared to other countries of this region and developments in those fields have set examples for others.

The WB vice president also hailed the reform programs undertaken by Bangladesh government in different sectors to accelerate the pace of development.

The issue of supplying pure drinking water in Dhaka and Chittagong and development support credit also came up for discussion.

Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman and WB Country Director Christine Wallich were present.
