General Sarath Fonseka "The security forces are attacking Mullaitivu, Prabhakaran's hideout, from several directions," Fonseka said. "The army's aim is to capture Prabhakaran -- who is holed up in a bunker -- alive."

He said security forces were attacking Mullaitivu, the northeastern coastal district where the 53-year-old Tamil separatist leader was believed to be based, from several fronts.

"The security forces are attacking Mullaitivu, Prabhakaran's hideout, from several directions," Fonseka said. "The army's aim is to capture Prabhakaran -- who is holed up in a bunker -- alive."

In the interview with the Sinhala language daily he said that four divisions of Sri Lanka Army were moving towards Mullaitivu and Task Force 2 will also be inducted to expedite the operation.

The 59 Division which was formed in January, this year under the command of Brigadier Nandana Udawatta has become a more challenging one as many predict that the fierce battles in the Wanni battle front are expected to erupt in the Weli Oya front advancing from Kokkuthuduvai to Kiriibbanvewa opening 12 kilometres long battle front.

Three Brigades, 591 under the command of Lt. Colonel Aruna Ariyasinghe, 592 Brigade under the Command of Lt. Colonel Maneesha Silva and 593 Brigade under the Command of Lt Colonel Palitha Fernando and under the Acting Command of Lt. Colonel Jaliya Senaratne from three areas have advanced into the Andankulam forest reserve in the south of Mullaitivu is located in the Martime Pattu Division in the Mullaitivu district.

Troops have pierced the LTTE's 1-4 Base complex perimeter in a preliminary bid to reach Mullaitivu. Prabhakaran is believed to be living in an underground bunker in the area.

Forces have already regained several hundreds of square kilometres where the Tigers held sway and they have to march forward another 20-21 kms to reach Mullaitivu, he said. He said Prabhakaran was cowardly attacking civilians in the South, unable to face the military onslaught.

The Government and the Security Forces were determined to liberate the Northern masses from the tyranny of the Tigers, as they did in the East. "Our Forces' morale is very high. They are determined to achieve victory," he added.
