London, 18 June, ( The Sri Lanka High Commission paid a high price and the life of the accountant was barely saved when he was mugged in front of 13 Hyde Park Gardens, the Chancellery of the High Commission in London.

Police sources said, 4000 British Pounds was mugged from Ranjith Perera , Accountant of the High Commission, when he was returning from the HSBC Bank in Paddington in London to his office on foot on June 17, about 2.30 p.m.

Though large amount of cashe being carried to the High Commission and back to the bank almost daily, the police investigations have found the High Commission authorities never provide him with any transport or security although the mission employs a large fleet of vehicles.

It is reliably learnt that the first priority of the vehicles in the mission is alleged to be given to the personal needs of handful of officials when vehicles are provided.

Police believe the mugging could be a well planned crime of some London criminals who might have watched Perera carrying large amount of cash almost daily between the HSBC Paddington Branch and the High Commission office.

He used to carry pads of bank notes inside his coat’s pocket. Somebody walking behind Ranjith Perera, according to the complaint, informed him that the back of his coat had a splash of paint on it. Then he noticed some drops also had fallen on his pant. That person also offered some tissue paper to clean the brown colored paint marks. Ranjit Perera refused to accept the offer for help and kept on walking to the chancellery building hurriedly with the determination of cleaning it up as soon as he reached the destination.

When he came near the office, curious to know what had happened, he removed his coat and had a look. There was a big splash of light brown paint on the black his coat.

In the meantime, suddenly an East European looking stocky man emerged and snatched the coat with the money and ran towards a parked car. Ranjith Perera ran behind the man but the culprit got into the car and vanished.

Eyewitnesses said the car was driven by a woman. Metropolitan Police of London is investigating.
