The statute of Our Lady of Madhu enthroned in the Madhu Church

Colombo, 11 August, (Asiantribune.com): The statute of Our Lady of Madhu, was enthroned yesterday afternoon around 4.30 PM at the Madhu Church. The Church authorities are expected to hold penitential and purification services today. Following the purification services church priests are expected to hold daily mass.

Earlier, suddenly the statute of the virgin Mary was removed from the 17th century Church and kept at Devenpiddy nearly 70 KM into the LTTE held area by the Bishop of Mannar.

Subsequent to protests by Catholic devotees all over and by the Government of Sri Lanka, Bishop of Mannar brought back the statute on 22nd July and temporarily kept it at the Bishop House located in Mannar

Yesterday evening, the statute of the Lady of Madhu was taken back by Bishop of Mannar and Vicar General of Mannar diocese Victor Soosai and reinstalled in the Madhu Church.

Sri Lankan armed forces which retook the Madhu and neighboring region from the control of the LTTE, repaired and renovated the church buildings and the church staff took charge of Madhu church on 6th of August after a four-month long absence.

At present there are seven Catholic priests residing in the Church premises and it might require time to return to normalcy. As the church administration faces logistical problems, Bishop of Mannar has anounced that this year’s annual feast schedule for the 15th August will not be held.
