Massive Sri Lankan Protest against Congressman Brad Sherman, Alleged LTTE Sympathizer

By Keith Amarasiri for Asian Tribune

Los Angeles, 17 August, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lankan Patriots in Los Angeles have organized a peaceful Satyagraha on August 23, from 1.30 p.m., to 3.30 p.m. at Reseda High School Auditorium at 18230 Kittridge Street, Reseda in California to protest Congressman Brad Sherman’s alleged supports for the LTTE.

The organizers are protesting to get Sherman out of the Congressional Sub Committee on Terrorism of which he is Chairman. They allege that Sherman has received campaign funds from the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) – the LTTE fund raising front which is now banned in the US and several countries. They allege that he was the chief Guest at the opening of TRO office in Reseda in 1999.

They allege that Sherman promoted the TRO as a legitimate charity despite evidence of LTTE connections to TRO ignoring the fact that TRO is listed as an LTTE outfit.

It is also alleged that Sherman is trying to get the LTTE off the US State Department's list of designated terrorists, maintaining that Sherman made an official comment that Al Qaeda terrorism (and, therefore, LTTE terrorism) is no different from the American War of Independence. In his mind, there's no difference between George Washington, Osama Bin Laden, and LTTE leader Prabhakaran!!

The Sri Lankan Patriots will present a petition to him demanding his resignation from the Congressional Sub Committee. They will hold a peaceful demonstration outside the town hall meeting and ask him questions.

The organizers propose to take the matter further – to Congress and Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Also the organizers are appealing to all Sri Lankans to join in this effort to get Sherman to realize that his actions tantamount to the support of terrorists. They also expect Sri Lankans from Nevada to join in the protest.
