Heavy fighting in Mavilaru; Ten commandoes, 40 LTTE killed.

Colombo. 01 August, (Asiantribune.com): Heavy fighting took place near the Mavilaru anicut as commandos advance in a terrain dotted with booby traps and mines, a military official said.

Ten commandoes including two officers have been killed in fighting. Seven bodies have been recovered and sent to the Kantalae Hospital.

Troops are 300 meters away from the anicut, but the open terrain is proving to be difficult, the official in the field said.

According to information received by wounded soldiers, heavy casualties were seen in the LTTE sides. According to unconfirmed sources at least 40 LTTE cadres were killed in the fighting.

A heavy gun brought by the LTTE could be seen on the bund. But sources could not confirm where it was a dummy.

Meanwhile, defence sources said a Sea Tiger base in Palchenai was destroyed by aerial and rocket bombardment.

Casualties of the LTTE were not known.

Heavy air strikes by Kafir and MIG 29 gunships were directed at LTTE positions around Mavilaru.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed sources said Trincomalee, LTTE student wing leader Purachchi and nine others were killed by the security forces advancing towards Mavilaru.
