Sri Lanka Army Commander back to work.

Colombo, 01 August, (Asiantribune.com): Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, Commander of the Sri Lanka Army who miraculously survived an LTTE (Tamil Tigers) suicide blast on 25th April, returned on Monday (31 July 2006) morning to take up office after full recovery.On that fateful day, a woman suicide bomber who had penetrated the Army Headquarters premises blew herself up but the Commander survived. Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka injured in the blast was flown to Singapore for further medical treatment after initial treatments at the Colombo National Hospital and Military hospital, Colombo, were over.

His office claimed that the Commander after recovery is now physically suited to discharge his duties in a more vigorous and enthusiastic manner.

When he reported for duty yesterday, religious observances were held and received the blessings of members of the Maha Sangha (Buddhist priests) before he re-started his official duties.

Dr Kollupitiye Sangharakkitha Thero, Chief incumbent, Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Brahmanawatte Siri Sivalee Nayaka Thero, Chief incumbent, Nagadeepa Temple, Ven. Harispattuwe Ariyawansalankara Nayaka Thero, Ven. Members of the Maha Sangha after a brief oration chanted Seth Pirith (religious chanting) and invoked blessings of Triple Gem as the Commander moved into his office premises. The Commander at the conclusion of the rituals also made offerings to the clergy.

A host of Senior Military Officers attended the brief ceremony. Mrs Anoma Fonseka, President Army Seva Vanitha Branch, was also associated with the occasion.

In a media release the Army Commander said: "I will proceed from here to fulfil my responsibilities undeterred by the dastardly act. I strongly believe your blessings and sentiments will provide me with necessary strength to complete that unfulfilled mission for a better tomorrow".

The full text of Lt. Gen. Fonseka's message is as follows:

“As the Commander of the Army on the day of my return to work after surviving the recent gruesome suicide terrorist attack, wish to extend my sincere gratitude and tribute to all Religious dignitaries of major denominations, His Excellency, the President, Prime Minister, Government Ministers and Members of Parliament, Secretary Defence, Other Government Officials, Medical Specialists and Doctors, Nursing Staff and Paramedics, members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Police, Media Personnel, Foreign dignitaries, Principals and Teachers of schools, various Associations and Public Forums, School Children, Members of the Public, Friends and former colleagues, Relatives and well-wishers who remained a tower of strength behind myself as well as members of my family ever since I was hospitalized after the attack. I also regret that I may not be able to express my gratitude individually to all those who visited the hospital and sent messages, as it was not possible to remain acquainted due to the tragic circumstances prevailed at that time.

“Your prayers and blessings by way of Bodhi Poojas, Special Poojas and Holy services, no doubt enormously contributed to expedite my path to recovery after the dastardly crime that took 11 lives and injured another 28. It is your thoughts and consideration that inspired and provided much required solace to me as well as members of my family to rise to the challenge enabling me to return to work. So did all greeting cards directed to me.

“Let me also assure you that I will proceed from here to fulfill my responsibilities undeterred by the dastardly act. I strongly believe your blessings and sentiments will provide me with the necessary strength to complete that unfulfilled mission for a better tomorrow. Thank you.”
