Colombo, 01 August, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka Navy thwarted Tamil militant attack and saved the lives of 854 unarmed soldiers, who traveled from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee in a passenger vessel.

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the separatist Sri Lanka Tamil militant outfit launched a major offensive on the Trincomalee harbor, midday today.

Also Tamil militants launched a simultaneous attack targeting a passenger vessel carrying 854 unarmed soldiers from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee, while the vessel was entering Trincomalee today around 2.15 p.m.

According to report Sri Lanka Naval sea unit confronted a cluster of LTTE suicide boats at the harbour entrance of Trincomalee.

The naval troops retaliated the LTTE attack and saved the passenger vessel and the unarmed security forces personnel unharmed. Naval sources confirmed that the passenger vessel has been navigated to a distance safely into the international waters and no casualties were caused during the confrontation.

Navy spokesman commander K.P. Dassanayake said three boats carrying the terrorists were completely destroyed in the attack. Several other boats carrying LTTE cadres were also damaged.

However, number of casualties due to the artillery attack at the Trincomalee harbour area is yet to be known.

Earlier, on 11th of May 2006, LTTE failed in a similar attempt to destroy a passenger vessel Pearl Cruise II transporting 600 unarmed security forces personnel. Previous attempt by the LTTE to attack the passenger vessel resulted the outfit being banned by the 25 countries in the European Unions.

Tension has mounted in the Trincomalee town following the LTTE attack at the naval harbour area and civilians are said to be seeking security forces assistance amidst the growing hostilities from the Tamil militants.
