Another 1000 Sri Lankans to be repatriated from Lebanon this week

Colombo, 03 August, (Asiantribune.com): A total of 1600 Sri Lankans working in Lebanon have been repatriated and reunited with their families in Sri Lanka, as the crisis in the Middle East showed no immediate signs of coming to an in the near future. The evacuation process will continue with the assistance of Qatar Airways this week, to bring home another 1000 Sri Lankans currently at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Lebanon, awaiting repatriation.

Meanwhile, a batch of 324 Sri Lankans arrived in Colombo on Sunday (30th) evening, via an Air India jet provided by the Indian government from Cyprus. The Sri Lankans were brought from Beirut to Cyprus, via an Indian naval vessel, and from Cyprus flown directly home by Air India. A Foreign Ministry official was sent to Cyprus to coordinate this operation with Sri Lanka's Hon. Consul, and the Indian Embassy officials in Cyprus.

Meanwhile, the Government of Sri Lanka has expressed its appreciation to the government of India for coming forward to help our citizens and bring them home safely.

Sri Lanka has also expressed its appreciation to the government of Qatar for the provision of a Qatar Airways Airbus A 300 plane exclusively dedicated in the next 10 days to the evacuation of Sri Lankans. Sri Lanka Embassy in Lebanon is coordinating the road transport from Beirut to Damascus with the assistance of IOM, while Caritas is providing transit accommodation facilities in Damascus.

The Sri Lanka Government also thanks IOM (International Organisation
for Migration) and Caritas for their continued assistance in the evacuation effort.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the Ministry of Labour Welfare and Employment and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, will continue its endeavours to bring back all Sri Lankans who wish to return home from Lebanon.
