European Commission earmarks EUR 23 million for Asia to co-finance sustainable consumption and production projects

Brussels, 08 November, (Asiantribune.com): The European Commission seeks proposals under the new SWITCH-Asia programme which will focus on the promotion of sustainable production and consumption patterns and behaviours in the Asian region.

Essentially the SWITCH-Asia programme aims to promote economic prosperity and poverty reduction in Asian countries through sustainable growth with reduced environmental impact by industries and consumers, in line with international environmental agreements and processes.

The main applicants of this programme are expected to be, intermediary business organisations and networks such as Chambers of Commerce, Industry Associations, non-profit-making organizations, which aim at pursuing sustainable development as well as Government institutions both at the central and local level.

All projects require a partnership of a minimum one organization from a Member State of the European Union and at least one organization from an eligible Asian country including Sri Lanka.

The overall indicative amount made available under this call for proposals is EUR 23 000 000 million (LKR 3.7 billion) but since the programme targets the Asian region a balanced coverage of the Asian countries will be given.

The SWITCH-Asia programme has been classified into two main components, and the minimum and maximum size of grant and duration of projects vary according to the component:

Component 1

Sustainable Production – EUR 1 million (minimum) – 2.5 million (maximum) 24 months (minimum) – 48 months (maximum)

Component 2

Sustainable Consumption - EUR 0.5 million (minimum) – 1 million (maximum) 24 months (minimum) – 36 months (maximum)

The application procedure will be two fold, the initial submission of a concept note and the submission of a full application form thereafter. The deadline for the submission of the concept note is 27 February 2009. Applicants which are short-listed post evaluation of the concept note, will be requested to submit full applications for the 27 May 2009 deadline.
