Prison Cell to Presidential Palace - Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) sworn in as president of Maldives

Male, 12 November, (Asiantribune.com): Mohamed Nasheed (Anni), a prominent leader of the democratic reform in the Maldives and former political prisoner has been sworn in as the new President of Maldives in a special session of the People’s Majlis held yesterday morning held at Dharubaaruge. The oath taking official ceremony was attended by the highest diplomat of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapakse and Indian Vice president Mohamed Hamid Ansari.

Many foreign high level dignitaries were present to witness as the new president sworn in with foreign and local media covering the historic event.

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse was in Male to congratulate the new Maldivian President immediately after being sworn in as the president.

Before his departure to New Delhi from Male to participate in the BIMSTEC 2 Summit, President Mahinda Rajapaksa held bilateral meeting with Maldives President Mohomed Naseed at Presidents office. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama also participated along with Sri Lanka President in the bilateral talks where in general pleasantries were exchanged. Reports said Newly sworn Maldivian President thanked Sri Lanka leader for being so liberal to his political campaigns in the initial days in Sri Lanka.

President Rajapaksa is also made a courtesy call on former President Gayoom.

Sri Lanka and the Maldives have very good relations dating back many centuries, which have been strengthened since the two countries gained independence from the British. They are both members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), which is currently chaired by Sri Lanka.

After Mohamed Nasheed and his vice president Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Maniku were sworn in, the president made his first official presidential address to the people of the Maldives.

"Praise to the one and only Almighty and blessings be upon the Holy Prophet (PBUH).” The president begins.

"Mr. Speaker, Honorable Members, Distinguished Guests and fellow Citizens: Please accept greetings and best wishes on the occasion of the Republic day of the Maldives. Our republic day is decorated with the new hues that mark this historic moment in time, the age that we live in, and the circumstances of the nation. The course of change that country has pursued has produced a smooth transition to a new presidency.” His address heard across the nation and cross border.

The president also said that the people can all sense time has given us to realize long anticipated dream come true and the serenity and tranquility has surrounded us with calm and hopes of prosperity. But he said this cannot be achieved without wisdom gained from the past and also we must remove the barrier of hatred, jealousy and rancor. The short but very detailed speech the president made it clear the people of the Maldives that the government he would bring is from the people of Maldives that he hopes the Citizen’s Majlis (Parliament) would endorse his proposed cabinet which was elected by the people across the nation. The oath to the president and his deputy was delivered and administered by Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed in the parliament witness. Just after the they both sworn in the signing of the oath documented by the parliament was done with signatures of the president and deputy, the Chief justice and the speaker of the Majlis Honorable Mohamed Shihab
