Arrest of eight fishing vessels and 42 fishermen from Sri Lanka

Chennai, 08 December, (Asiantribune.com): Eight Sri Lankan fishing vessels with forty two crew members were apprehended by the Indian Coast Guard and were brought to the Chennai fisheries harbour on 7th December 2008 in the presence of officials of the Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai.

The forty two crew members hailed from various parts of Sri Lanka including from Devinuwara and Trincomalee and Negombo.

The officials from the Deputy High Commission in Chennai met the crew members and ascertained their health and wellbeing.

Following the preliminary inquiries, the forty two crew members were produced before a Magistrate and were remanded at the Puzhal prison, until the Joint Interrogation Committee (JIC) meeting is convened by the Tamil Nadu Government.

The Deputy High Commission in Chennai will take action based on the decision of the JIC which is expected to be convened shortly.
