Sri Lanka National Quality Awards

By Manjari Peiris from Colombo

Colombo, 18 December,( "Monitoring the improvement and quality of a product is very important and nowadays consumers always look for the SLSI mark whenever they purchase a product. Our government is fully appreciating the activities of Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI)," Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake said addressing the 14th Sri Lanka National Quality Awards Programme, held at the BMICH this week.

The Sri Lanka National Quality Award is the highest national award presented in this country for Performance Excellence. The criteria for evaluation of the applications are leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, workforce focus, process management and results. These criteria are same as the criteria used for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards in the USA. More than 80 countries use the same criteria for the purpose of their own National Quality Awards.

The awards are presented in 4 categories, viz. manufacturing, service, education and healthcare and the scales being, large, medium and small.

Minister of Science & Technology, Professor Tissa Vitarana said that the SLSI had taken the sole responsibility of ensuring national and international standards in the manufacturing and services sectors of our country. “The SLS mark guarantees the quality of a product and it is well acceptable in our society. This is a very healthy development. The ISO standards are being more and more widely spread and acceptable as criteria for foreign buyers to decide on before they purchase from our manufacturers. Now we don’t have to go for accreditation from foreign countries and pay more as the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB) has begun its activities at a cheaper price.”

The Minister remarked that the National Quality Awards Programme is doing an invaluable service by testing stimulus of foreign companies and to achieve good quality conforming to the highest international standards.
